Gabriel McGuire

Co-Chair, ECOFIN

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to ILMUNC LVIII! I’m Gabriel McGuire, and I’ll be your chair for this ECOFIN Committee. On behalf of the Dias, I would like to thank you for your interest, dedication, and participation. We are so excited to welcome you to the conference!

This committee delves into the complicated intersection of climate change and global development. Two of the most pressing issues of today, delegates will roleplay common discussions between global leaders. But even with international attention on sustainable (and equitable) development, large steps have yet to be made to transform the world’s approach. This stalling largely comes as a product of long-lasting, systemic factors that influence sustainable development, climate justice, and unequal emissions. We challenge you to brainstorm creative solutions that address the root causes of these issues. Jameson and I know this is a mighty task for the few hours we have together. However, we look forward to your thoughtful diplomacy and solutions!

To give a little background on your committee chair, I’m currently a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences studying International Relations and English. I staffed the ADHOC committee of ILMUNC LVII, and was an avid MUN competitor in high school. While I never participated in ILMUNC, this conference is by far the most fun. Outside of MUN, I work in domestic partisan politics and international nuclear non-proliferation advocacy.

I come from a rural town of 1,000 people in South-central Pennsylvania, and while I’m early into my Penn career, I truly enjoy the campus community. It’s a pleasure to share with you our school and Philly spirit!

Please feel free to reach out to me or Jameson before the conference with questions about the committee. We’ll see you in January!
