TOPIC A: Security and Cooperation in the Mediterranean

On November 2 of 2023, the First Committee sent twenty-two drafts of the General Assembly for adoption, focusing on ways to balance individual country sovereignty with an overarching goal for increased security in the area. Specifically, the resolution calls on countries to “adhere to relevant multilateral negotiated legal instruments related to disarmament and non-proliferation.” The resolution has caused a few notable extensions, including Israel, Papua New Guinea, South Sudan, and the United States. Given this, and with development in mind, what are ways in which security can be strengthened throughout the Mediterranean region?

TOPIC B: The Role of the Mediterranean in the Energy Crisis

Recently, many European countries have been immersed in an energy crisis, with an increasing unfulfilled demand due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. With significant energy capacity and capabilities, many Eastern Mediterranean states provide the potential to fill this energy gap. But, fragile domestic governments and regional agreements, maritime boundary disputes, and a search for renewable energy complicate this reality. How can the current reality of the energy crisis be mitigated and adapted for changing energy demands in the 21st century?
