Conference ‣ Meet The Secretariat
Jay Raghavan Jay Raghavan
Secretary-General
Jay is proud to be the Secretary-General of UPMUNC! A dual degree student in the Class of 2010, Jay plans to major in Economics and Systems Engineering. He has been very involved with Model UN since high school, having attended and chaired conferences in China, Singapore, and Ireland. After graduating high school at the American Embassy School in New Delhi, Jay made Model UN his main extracurricular commitment at Penn, and was the Under-Secretary General of the ECOSOC and Specialized committees in 2007. Outside of UPMUNC, Jay is a member of the Undergraduate Economics Society, and in his spare time, he tries to hit the gym, watches Lost and The Office, and keenly follows European football/soccer. He is sure that his work with the amazing Secretariat will make UPMUNC 2008 the best in its illustrious 42-year history!
Matt Belgiovine Matt Belgiovine
Director-General
Matt is here at Penn studying Business and Public Policy and Systems Engineering. Having been a member of the International Affairs Association since coming to Penn, Matt has served UPMUNC as an Assistant-Secretary-General then as an Under-Secretary-General for Crisis Committees at UPMUNC 2007. Besides the IAA, Matt participates in rugby and the Penn Dems. He's looking forward to what will definitely be the best UPMUNC yet!

JoAnna is a student in the College of Arts and Sciences double-majoring in Economics and International Relations. She is proud to serve as UPMUNC's Chief of Staff this year and is looking forward to working with the remarkable staff to continue our legacy! She is from the lively city of Las Vegas (which she believes everyone should visit, second to UPMUNC of course) and is a very loyal fan of the west coast. JoAnna has also served as one of the Business Directors for UPMUNC 2007, and as Assistant-Secretary-General for UPMUNC 2006. She spends her free time surfing people.com, taking bubble baths, and dreaming about Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl.
Harris Atmar Harris Atmar
Business Director of External Relations
Harris Atmar is the External Business Director for UPMUNC 2008. Born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and raised in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Harris views the Middle East as a familiar and comfortable home. Educated in an American School he has led a diverse and international lifestyle and is open to many different perspectives. Fascinated by international politics and commerce from an early age, Harris looks forward to securing sponsorships that will help facilitate an active and engaging conference in Philadelphia that will expand delegates' understanding of international affairs.
Catherine Gao Catherine Gao
Business Director of Internal Affairs
Catherine is the co-business director for UPMUNC '08, which is widely known as the most amazing and fun Model UN conference ever! Hailing from the land of the corn, Indiana, she is currently studying Finance and International Relations at Penn. Catherine has been involved with Model UN since high school and served as an Assistant-Secretary-General for UPMUNC '07. In her spare time, she enjoys playing piano, reading, learning languages, and traveling. She is incredibly excited for UPMUNC '08 and can't wait to meet you all!
Bill Marczak Bill Marczak
Director of Operations
Bill Marczak is a Computer Science and Mathematics double-major at Penn. Having served as Director of Operations of UPMUNC 2007, Bill looks forward to reprising his previous role this year. Bill has had a passion for Model UN since his Freshman year of High School, which has led him to attend numerous conferences, including international conferences in Bahrain, Cairo, and Dublin. In his free time, Bill enjoys travelling, arguing politics, and discussing the latest US Supreme Court decisions.
Marissa Dwyer Marissa Dwyer
Director of Creative Operations
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Marissa is a College student studying International Relations and Political Science. She is excited for UPMUNC 2008 after serving as an Assistant-Secretary-General for last year's conference. When not busy with Model UN, Marissa can usually be found at the rink playing ice hockey. She loves the Philadelphia Flyers, Eagles, and Phillies, having ridden their emotional rollercoaster seasons since birth. Marissa is anxiously anticipating discovering her cultural roots when she studies abroad in Ireland her junior year!
Therlow Huntley Therlow Huntley
Under-Secretary-General of Special Events
Stanley Therlow Huntley II is a student in the College of Arts and Sciences. He comes from the great city of Greenville, South Carolina. If you know it take your shirt off and spin it around your head like a helicopter. He plans to major in PPE, an interdisciplinary major that incorporates Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics into one major, while also studying for a minor in Spanish. So yeah, he is intense, but he is also very down to earth. When not working it, which is always rare, Therlow enjoys fishing and hunting. After serving as an Assistant-Secretary-General during UPMUNC 2007, Therlow is ecstatic to be USG Special Events. He vows to change Model UN Conferences across the globe by focusing first on having fun.
Payal Sobti Payal Sobti
Under-Secretary-General of the General Assembly
Payal is a junior at Penn studying Economics. She hails from a small suburb of New York City but frequently tells people she is actually from "the city"...you know, just to make things easier. She has also lived abroad in Hong Kong and frequently visits India. Payal has been a devoted member of the International Affairs Association since her freshman year, and is proud to serve as the USG GA for UPMUNC 2008! Please approach her with any problems concerning unbearable room temperatures, replenishment of water, or your chair...(just kidding, my chairs are incredible!) She hopes you will enjoy all the hard work and effort this Secretariat has put into this year's conference. Enjoy!
Aditi Marisetti Aditi Marisetti
Under-Secretary-General of the Economic and Social Council
Coming all the way from Toronto, Canada, Aditi is trading in her igloos and maple syrup to be the USG of the ECOSOC and Specialized Committees! Aditi is a student in the College of Arts and Sciences and looking to major in International Relations. She is interested in anything that has to do with politics, philosophy and chocolate, and would love to discuss these topics with anyone who will listen. After being an ASG for UPMUNC XLI, Aditi fell in love with Model UN at Penn, and is thrilled to be part of another amazing UPMUNC conference!
Louise Wang Louise Wang
Under-Secretary-General of Crisis Committees
Hailing from Louisiana, Louise (no pun intended) is so excited to be your USG Crisis. She dreams of studying biochemistry, biology, economics, history, and math. So basically, she hasn't decided on a major yet. She's going to be one of those people 15 years from now who has six degrees and no job and no money. But future aside, she is pumped for UPMUNC XLII. When she's not doing things for the conference, she enjoys running, dancing, eating chocolate, listening to Cake, and reading obscure books. Come join in the fun at the conference!
Poorvi Kunzru Poorvi Kunzru
Under-Secretary-General of Crisis Committees
Poorvi Kunzru is one of the two USG Crises for UPMUNC 2008! She is from Kashmir and Bangalore in India, but grew up in Calcutta, Delhi, Dubai, and Muscat. She loves to travel and has visited over twenty-five countries. Her love for the international life and international politics is the primary reason she is involved in MUN (the good-looking UPMUNC secretariat being the second reason). In her spare time, Poorvi likes to golf, write, drink coffee, spend time with her family and dogs, and philosophize.
