My name is Terry Hanlon and I am very excited to be chairing this year’s Legal Committee. It is my goal for the committee to be challenging, engaging, but most of all fun. But our success in achieving those lofty adjectives lies primarily with you!
So a little bit about me... I am a senior in the Wharton Business School here at Penn, majoring in Management and Legal Studies. I was born in New Jersey, moved to the Chicago suburbs, and now reside in sunny South Florida. I have done Model UN since I was a freshman in high school, so this will be the 18th conference I have been involved with as either a delegate or on the other side of the dais. Aside from Model UN, I am a Residential Advisor, a Peer Advisor for freshmen in the Wharton School, and a member of a fraternity. I am a huge Yankees fan and a film buff, so if you want to talk Bronx Bombers or movies, I am excited to do so.
This year’s topics will be “Criminal Accountability of United Nations Officials and Experts on Missions” and “Secession of Ethnic Groups from Sovereign States.” Both topics deal with setting UN Legal policy, and will require a good deal of research prior to the conference. But more importantly, these topics will require compromise during the sessions to garner broad support, so that any implemented policies will be effective for years to come.
If you have any questions about the conference, committee, topics, Philadelphia, Penn, or me, do not hesitate to email me. I cannot wait to meet all of you!
