Economic and Social Council Committees and Specialized Agencies

United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization
United Nations Development Programme
United Nations Children's Fund
Union for the Mediterranean
International Monetary Fund

The committees of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and Specialized Agencies discuss crucial nonpolitical issues in a smaller forum, comprising of roughly fifty states. ECOSOC itself was established under the UN Charter as the principal organ to coordinate economic, social, and related work of the fourteen UN specialized agencies, functional commissions, and five regional commissions. New additions this year include the International Monetary Fund, the UN Development Programme, and for the first time ever at UPMUNC, the Union for the Mediterranean - three very pertinent committees given the present global state of affairs.

Letter from the USG

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the 44th session of UPMUNC! My name is Ariela Cohen, and I am the ECOSOC/Specialized Under-Secretary-General for UPMUNC 2010. This conference has a pristine history of engaging its delegates in meaningful debate while offering them one of the most fun weekends of their lifetime. Our team this year is sure to do the same for you. A sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences, I intend to major in PPE (Politics, Philosophy, and Economics). I came to the University of Pennsylvania from the valley of Los Angeles with no prior knowledge of the Model United Nations world but knowing I wanted to dive in the moment I stepped on campus. Starting with my stint as an UPMUNC 2009 assistant secretary general, I have since staffed and debated at a few other conferences and have come to love the art.

It excites me to present to you delegates this year's ECOSOC and Specialized committees. From our traditional UNESCO to our newer Union For the Mediterranean, your chairs and I have worked to provide you with innovative and engaging opportunities for discussion. I'm excited for you all to arrive in November, and if you have any questions before then, don't hesitate to contact me.

Yours,

Ari Cohen
