Welcome to UPMUNC

Letter from the Secretary-General

Dear Delegates, Faculty Advisors, and Friends,

Grace Martens

I am delighted to invite you to the fifty-fourth iteration of the University of Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference. For the past fifty-four years, UPMUNC has provided delegates with a personalized, innovative conference experience, and we are looking forward to upholding our tradition of excellence this fall. I am honored to be this year’s Secretary-General, and am grateful to be working alongside the outstanding UPMUNC 54 Secretariat that will stop at nothing to provide you with the absolute best conference experience.

Renowned as the world’s most enjoyable and professional college Model United Nations conference, UPMUNC aims to provide all delegates with an exceptional conference weekend. With an array of diverse topics that span geographical regions, time periods, and overarching themes, UPMUNC’s in-room committee experience is unparalleled. This year, the UPMUNC 54 Secretariat is proud to present 20 unique committees: 4 large General Assembly (GA) committees, 4 medium-sized Economic and Social Councils (ECOSOC) and Specialized Committees, and 12 fast-paced Crisis committees. Whether you are a Model UN newcomer or an experienced delegate, you are guaranteed to participate in a committee that both intrigues and excites you over the conference weekend. Our Under-Secretary-Generals have been hard at work alongside our 200-member staff to ensure that each and every one of your committees will be intellectually stimulating and conducted with the highest level of diplomacy.

Nonetheless, there is certainly far more to UPMUNC than the debate that takes place within committee rooms. Situated in the heart of Philadelphia, you will find yourself within walking distance of America’s most historic landmarks, a variety of museums to visit, and some amazing new restaurants to try. Furthermore, our Business Directors are excited to provide you with new ways to connect with esteemed companies and local organizations, and our Special Events Directors are looking forward to hosting you at UPMUNC’s very own special events, many of which have become hallmarks of the UPMUNC experience.

Lastly, I want to highlight that clear communication and the safety of our delegates and staff are UPMUNC’s top priority. Despite the unprecedented challenges of the past year, we are committed to ensuring that all who participate in the conference will not only have an unforgettable experience, but will be safe in the pursuit. On that note, our Directors of Operations will update our website regularly to reflect the most up-to-date conference procedures and policies.

I cannot wait to welcome you to Philadelphia for the fifty-fourth session of UPMUNC this fall. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about the conference, please feel free to reach out to me or any member of the UPMUNC Secretariat. We are so excited to host you at this year’s conference and are looking forward to wishing you all a very happy UPMUNC!

Letter from the Director-General

Dear Delegates, Faculty Advisors, and Friends,

Liam Cook

It is my esteemed pleasure to introduce you all to the 54th iteration of the University of Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference (UPMUNC). By means of introduction, my name is Liam Cook, and I am a senior at the University of Pennsylvania. I’m a student in the College of Arts & Sciences, receiving a dual degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) and Cinema and Media Studies.

I have been a member of the Model UN community since my freshman year of high school. This will be my third year as a member of the UPMUNC Secretariat, and I am beyond excited to work with this team for another year. When I first joined Penn, I knew that I was going to get involved with Model UN. However, I had no idea that UPMUNC would become my second family while living on the East Coast. Cristian, Jesse, and Catherine, our upper-sec team, are incredible leaders — and I can’t wait for their hard work to be recognized!

Grace and I have been working tirelessly to continue the UPMUNC legacy of premier committees and innovative solutions, and it is my great pleasure to work as the Director-General this year. Welcoming you to Philadelphia will be one of my best experiences at University. I have big shoes to fill, and I am confident that my love for debate and passion for Model UN will continue to establish UPMUNC as a celebrated and formidable conference.

We cannot wait to welcome you to Philadelphia this fall for UPMUNC 54. Our vision for this conference is incredible, and I honestly can’t wait to get started! With hopes of establishing meaningful connections, substantive debate, and a positive experience for all, UPMUNC 54 will be truly memorable.

I cannot wait to see you all this fall!

Liam Cook
