Welcome to UPMUNC
Letter from the Secretary-General
Dear Delegates, Faculty Advisors, and Friends,
I am absolutely delighted to invite you to the fifty-second iteration of the University of Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference. For the past fifty-two years, our deepest desire has been to provide the most professional service to the best and brightest delegates from all over the world. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for granting us the opportunity to demonstrate that we will stop at nothing to provide you with the absolute best conference experience. UPMUNC 52 is honored to host you at the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel.
The Secretariat is eager to prove why our conference is continuously renowned as the world’s most enjoyable and professional college Model United Nations conference. UPMUNC prides itself on being able to offer one of the largest college Model UN symposiums in the world by providing outstanding service to over 80 universities and 1,400 delegates from across the globe. We distinguish ourselves not only with our vast array of innovative committee offerings, but also with our unsurpassable nightly social events.
UPMUNC looks to provide all delegates with utmost satisfaction throughout the entire weekend, beginning with the in-room committee experience. This year, UPMUNC 52 is proud to offer 20 distinct committees: 4 large General Assembly (GA) committees, 4 medium-sized Economic and Social Councils (ECOSOC) and Specialized Committees, and 12 fast-paced Crisis committees. Whether you are a Model UN newcomer or an expert delegate, you are sure to find a committee that both intrigues and excites you over the course of four days. With our dedicated 40-member secretariat and 300-member staff, we have no doubt that each and every one of your committees will be intellectually stimulating and conducted with the highest level of professionalism.
There is certainly far more to UPMUNC than the debate that takes place within committee rooms. We are honored to be able to host our yearly Speaker Series once again, which will feature experts on various topics debated in-room. But that’s not all that awaits you—at UPMUNC, you will find yourself within walking distance of some of America’s most historic landmarks and Philadelphia’s marvelous nightlife. UPMUNC will surely guide the way with special events each night of conference, capping off the weekend with our famous Delegate Fest; it is events such as these distinguish us further as the conference of choice across the globe.
I cannot wait to welcome you to the city of Brotherly Love and to the fifty-second session of UPMUNC. Each and every one of our dedicated staffers has made your experience their highest priority; if you would like to know more about the conference, please feel free to reach out to our Secretariat. We are excited to demonstrate why UPMUNC will forever be the most exciting and intellectually-stimulating college Model UN conference in the world.
Cheers to UPMUNC 52! We could not be more ecstatic to have you with us for the ride.
Letter from the Director-General
Dear Delegates, Faculty Advisors, and Friends,
It is my pleasure to introduce you all to the 52nd iteration of the University of Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference (UPMUNC). I am a member of the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business, and originally a student of The British Schools of Montevideo, Uruguay.
This conference has been a part of my life for the past three years: it has seen me grow from a naïve freshman, overconfident in his MUN experience, into a slightly less naïve senior, ready to pour all of my efforts and ambitions into giving back to the organization that has contributed so much to me. I am more than proud to serve as this year’s Director General. This is a role that I have seen incredible people fulfill, some of the strongest and most innovative people that I have had the pleasure to meet. It is a role that is ever changing, after all, leadership comes with no handbook, but one that I hope I can uniquely shape, and thus inspire generations to come to do the same, only pushing the role, and the conference, to bigger and better things.
Of course, this letter could not be written without mentioning the incredible person that I have the pleasure of serving alongside with every day. Danielle, Danito, Dan Dan, is (and will be!), simply put, my best friend. I remember the day when we realized just how much work this conference would be, and how much time we would be seeing each other. Luckily, the more time we spent together, the harder it was to be apart, and the one-word “withdrawal” texts we have sent each other are pretty countless. The reason why this is so important, is because I believe that together we can achieve everything that we put our minds to. Our brainstorming sessions have been countless, and the amount of communication regarding this conference has been endless. We have a joint mission: you will have the best Model UN conference you’ve ever attended.
Furthermore, we have the help of an incredible Secretariat. I have seen them evolve and develop the skills to push this to the next level, and I am beyond proud of what they have and will achieve in the coming months. Ellie, Mark, and Will, I trust you with everything and anything, and my gratitude cannot be fully expressed, and I know that the other members of the Secretariat will grow and flourish under your guidance.
UPMUNC has been a staple of the college circuit for years now, but it is time for change. It is time for innovation, revolution, and breaking out of the “rut”. I would not have taken this role if it meant following each step of the previous DGs, without adding my own bit. I consider myself to be an outside of the box thinker, and as good as we currently are, I want us to be different. I want this change to be noticeable and I want for delegates and staffers to have the best experience yet, not just noting subtle improvements, but to have an experience that as they wheel their luggage away on Sunday, they will know that UPMUNC 52 was different: greater and better than ever.
I hope to see you all this coming November!
