Delegates,

Welcome to the First Committee of the General Assembly at UPMUNC 2008! Our names are Daniel Eisenberg and Stefanos Kasselakis, and we are privileged to be co-Chairing the premier committee of any Model United Nations conference: Disarmament and International Security (DISEC).

Daniel is a Senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, studying international health, political science, and music. Stefanos is a Senior in the Huntsman Program, a dual-degree regimen that couples business and international relations.

We are both active members of the International Affairs Association (the umbrella organization of UPMUNC), most notably as members of our intercollegiate team. We first started working together at UPMUNC during freshman year, and have since been partners on several intercollegiate trips. As Seniors who have chaired past UPMUNCs, we are nostalgic in preparation of our last one. We have accrued extensive experience as delegates, and are extremely invested in providing an efficient and productive platform for the discussion of two pertinent topics. The Dais has carefully chosen these two controversial and nuanced subjects with the hope that they will incite passionate debate.

The first topic, regarding the terrorist threat posed by militant non-state actors, will require delegates to consider disarmament and international security creatively. The second topic, regarding non-proliferation of chemical weapons of mass destruction, will require the committee to revisit more classic issues of non-proliferation in the context of rapid technological innovations.

Please do not hesitate to contact us at any point leading up to the conference with any questions or concerns. We hope that this year’s DISEC will be an unparalleled Model United Nations experience!
