Welcome to the University of Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference! My name is Mark Rook and I will be serving as your Chair for the Great Sejm. For a bit of background information, I am a senior at Penn and plan on majoring in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. I was born in Hungary, lived in Indianapolis for most of his life, and currently reside in Boston. To ensure that nobody knows where I’m going or what I’m saying, I currently have three citizenships and speak six languages. When I’m not travelling the world, I enjoy playing and watching soccer. At Penn, my passion is participating in the International Affairs Association, formerly as the CFO for this wonderful conference and Business Director for the Community Outreach and Engagement branch. I also write international relations articles on European Politics for the Metric and play on an intramural soccer team. I can’t wait to work closely with my staffers in the coming months to make UPMUNC a fantastic experience for all of you. In the last three years, I’ve spent my time helping to run this conference, so I’m looking forward to spending my last UPMUNC staffing it. I am thrilled to see what creative solutions you can come up with to tackle this session’s challenging debate topics and look forward to meeting you all! If you have any questions or concerns feel free to reach out to me or your USG, Zoey Weisman.
I am so incredibly excited to welcome all of you to UPMUNC 53! My name is Jared Bassett and I am looking forward to working with all of you this upcoming fall as a moderator for The Great Sejm committee. As a historical Economic and Social Council simulation, I am looking forward to witnessing the committee take on the difficult task of redefining the political climate of the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth. To provide some information about myself, I am originally from Westchester, New York. I am currently in the College of Arts and Sciences here at Penn, planning to major in biology with a minor in chemistry. I am also on the pre-medical track. When not in school, I have spent most of my time conducting research in oncology-oriented laboratories. Outside of academics however, I enjoy hanging out with friends, trying ethnic foods from various restaurants in Philadelphia, drinking coffee, and playing video games. Over the course of the past year, I have also been heavily involved with the International Affairs Association here at Penn. During this past February, I worked as an Assistant-Secretary General for the Ivy League Model United Nations Conference (ILMUNC XXXV)! Having participated in numerous conferences throughout high school, I am looking forward to making the collegiate model UN experience as exciting and fun as it can be! In terms of this committee, I am looking for delegates that embody a balance of initiative and interdependence. In this respect, I envision a committee in which all delegates are able to take matters into their own hands, while simultaneously collaborating amongst one another. At the same time, I also hope to see delegates develop a strong understanding of the topic, and compound this with inventiveness and creativity as they attempt to maneuver their way through the committee. Above all, I hope that each delegate is able find committee both academically enriching and enjoyable! I hope you all have a fantastic summer, and I am looking forward to meeting you all in the fall!
Sincerely, Jared Bassett
This committee will debate the proceedings of the Great Sejm, as known as the Four-Year-Sejm, that took place in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1788-1792. The main focus of the sejm was its commitment to politically and economically reform the Commonwealth, in attempting to rectify well-established political defects of the federative Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Great Sejm tackles issues of political equality between nobles and peasants, granting the later greater government protectection. This committee will focus on how a state was able to evolve itself into a more egalitarian and democratic constitutional monarchy during a time in history where political freedom and rights were being redefined across the world.
If you have any questions about this committee, feel free to reach out to your Under-Secretary General Zoey Weisman at firstname.lastname@example.org
