Welcome to UPMUNC 53 and the Series of Unfortunate Events committee! My name is Ben May, and I will serve as your Chair. A bit about myself, I was born in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia but lived on Long Island for most of my life. As a junior at Penn, I am studying International Relations and Economics as well as six languages. I have been doing Model UN since freshman year of high school. Outside of UPMUNC, I am a member of Penn’s competitive Model UN team (Intercol); a fellow at the Perry World House; a member of student government; a tour guide; and am a hard-core tree hugging activist, organizing an international activism-orientated nonprofit called ThinkOcean and recently being recognized as 30 Under 30 for Environmental Education. Loving the outdoors, I live to scuba dive, hike, and go camping. Likewise, with family ties to the circus, I grew up learning to juggle, stilt walk, do aerial performances on silks, and more. I’ll be chairing with my good friend Raj Bhuva as Crisis Director. Don’t be fooled, he says he’s an engineer and calls himself an “environmentalist”, but we all know he’ll just sell out to Shell. If you have any questions at all, feel free to reach out to our USG Catherine, Raj, or myself!
Sincerely, Ben May
Welcome to UPMUNC 53 and welcome to A Series of Unfortunate Events! My name is Raj Bhuva and I will be serving as your Crisis Director. This committee is quite special to me since I grew up reading the gripping novels by Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket). While the novels themselves would leave many questions unanswered, especially about the V.F.D. organization, there have been several adaptions of the series, including a movie and a much popular Netflix show! These different interpretations will allow committee to be creative in debating topics, responding to crises and deciding the actions and ultimate fate of the V.F.D. A little about myself – I’m from Mumbai, India and have been involved with Model UN since freshman year of high school. I competed as a delegate as well as helped organize my high school conference – both of these have helped me sustain my passion for international affairs and debate. At Penn, I am a senior studying chemical engineering with minors in chemistry, engineering entrepreneurship and statistics. I compete on the circuit with the Penn Model UN travelling team, Intercol and have previously served as the Director-General of our high school conference in India – ILMUNC India. Outside of Model UN, I am active with Penn’s chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and a brother of the Phi Gamma Nu professional business fraternity. In my (very little) free time, I enjoy checking out new web-series, watching cute cat videos, reading up on renewable energy and storage technology
Sincerely, Raj Mukesh Bhuva
Based on Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, this committee follows the Volunteer Fire Department before the schism. Canon from the original series, the TV show, and All the Questions, more literary-inspired characters are up for grabs. With fires popping up everywhere, including the internal fire of conflicting organization philosophies, the VFD must decide how it must change and what to do with the Sugar Bowl and the Medusoid Mycelium. Do you fight fire with fire?
If you have any questions about this committee, feel free to reach out to your Under-Secretary General Catherine Qian at email@example.com
