I know you all are excited for the memories inside and outside of committee and I cannot wait to welcome you to UPMUNC 2019! Model United Nations has been a huge part of my college experience and I’m so grateful for everything that I have learned and the people that I’ve met. I’ll be sure to bring that gratitude and dedication to ensuring your experience lives up to the promise of UPMUNC, to be the nation’s premier intercollegiate conference. A little about me - I’m a junior in the Wharton School studying Finance and Statistics. My hometown is Great Falls, VA, (just outside of Washington DC) and I have two dogs, one sister, and two parents. Outside of UPMUNC, I am the leader of the Wharton Dean’s Board (think student government), a member of “INTERCOL” (Penn’s competitive Model UN team), and a writer for the Wharton Business Review. I’ve competed in crisis committees for all of college across the circuit so I’ll be sure to draw upon those experiences to make sure everyone has a challenging, engaging flow of debate. As you prepare for committee, be sure to focus on realism, innovative solutions, and anticipating challenges. We want to keep debate within the scope of feasible real-world solutions to ensure that everyone is taking away useful skills after the conference. That being said, if you can provide strong evidence for an out-of-the-box solution, we also encourage delegates to think critically about new ways to address issues in a historical context. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions and I hope you have a relaxing summer and Fall semester.
Sincerely, Andrew Howard
It is my honor to welcome you all to the Fifty-Third Session of UPMUNC! Myself, alongside with the entire staff, is excited to have you here! It is my pleasure to introduce myself as the Crisis Director of Marvel Board of Directors. This crisis simulation will prove to be one of the most dynamic, unique, and captivating that UPMUNC has seen yet. A little about me, I am currently a sophomore in the College of Arts in Sciences studying Economics and Chemistry with a minor in Statistics. Outside of UPMUNC, I participate in Intercol, Penn’s competitive traveling Model UN team, and consult for companies as a part of MUSE Consulting. I originally hail from West Windsor, NJ, a quiet town located about a hour north of Philadelphia. It was during high school that I was introduced to Model UN and right off the bat I was captivated by it, especially by crisis committees. Model UN has provided me the perfect mix of international relations, collaboration, and excitement - a rare combination to find. However, more importantly, it Model UN has provided me with some of my closest friends and most memorable experiences. Whether this is our first conference or your tenth, this committee will provide to be an unforgettable four days where you will be able to immerse yourself in the world of Model UN and pick up invaluable skills along the process. I hope every single one of you become a stronger and more confident individual after this simulation. The UPMUNC Staff has been working tirelessly to make sure that every delegate has the best possible experience that they can have and I can’t wait to meet all of you. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.
Sincerely, Vishesh Shah
My name is Vinai Kumar and I am a sophomore in the Wharton School and the College of Arts and Sciences, concentrating in Business Analytics in Wharton and Biology in the College. Originally from Chesterfield, Missouri, I attended Marquette High School. At Marquette, I was a part of the Model United Nations team, through which I discovered my interest in foreign affairs and diplomacy. At Penn, I am a member of Intercol and ILMUNC (UPMUNC’s sister conference for high school students). Because I loved being a part of Model UN conferences, I was very interested in the idea of being able to help staff one in college. Thus, I am very much looking forward to bringing Marvel Board of Directors to life and witnessing the interactions between historical delegates. Outside of Model United Nations, I enjoy spending time outside, playing tennis, and traveling. I am truly excited to welcome you all to UPMUNC 53. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to me or to our Under-Secretary-General, Cristian Bernaschina-Guillermety.
Sincerely, Vinai Kumar
Behind American popular culture icons like Iron Man, Hulk, the Avengers, and Captain America lies Marvel Entertainment Group. News has just broken that the company has filed for bankruptcy, and this board is tasked with safeguarding the future of this American entertainment giant. All assembled in one room, the company’s directors must be innovative in ideating new strategies and proposals to save the company from disappearing. Will Marvel be able to identify new business ventures and partnerships to do so? How much risk are these directors willing to endure as they try to save the company from complete failure? None
If you have any questions about this committee, feel free to reach out to your Under-Secretary General Cristian Bernaschina at email@example.com
