Preparing for a Model United Nations Conference, while exciting, can also leave a delegate a little confused, overwhelmed, or just very curious. We put together this Frequently Asked Questions page so that hopefully, some of your questions can be answered in an instant. What does the 'priority registration' deadline mean?The priority registration deadline is for those delegations that want to receive priority in country requests. We recommend getting in your deposits by this deadline, as over 60 schools attend UPMUNC, and meeting this deadline would increase your chances of representing a country of your choice.
Does UPMUNC provide financial assistance?Formally, UPMUNC does not provide financial aid to delegations. However, we are happy to review requests on a case-by-case basis. Please email upmunc@upmunc.org to describe the exact nature of your situation. We're here to help to the best of our ability!
Are pre-written resolutions allowed at UPMUNC?Pre-written resolutions are NOT allowed at UPMUNC. While outside research and pre-conceived ideas are encouraged, writing resolutions beforehand unfairly disadvantages those delegates that only recently discovered their position. As a result, we prohibit any pre-written documents.
Are laptops allowed at UPMUNC?Laptops are NOT allowed in committee at UPMUNC. This, again, is to prevent unfair advantage. The UPMUNC staff, however, is committed to bringing typed copies of your written documents to committee as quickly as possible. If you have a medical condition or disability that necessitates the use of a laptop, please email the Secretary-General and Director-General at upmunc@upmunc.org.
Are position papers required at UPMUNC?Position papers make up an important part of good representation at conference, and as a result, we do ask for them. Please note the following:
- Position Papers are to be no longer than one page per issue, single-spaced (or two pages, double-spaced).
- They should be submitted via email, by November 1st, to upmunc@upmunc.org with 'Position Papers' in the subject and your Committee, University, and Name in the body of the email.
- In another decision taken to prevent unfair advantage, printing for delegates is unavailable. Please print Position Papers prior to leaving for Philadelphia.
Very well! UPMUNC, more than ever before, is making a strong effort to welcome first-time delegates. On the morning of the second day of conference (there is no committee session then), we will be having a Model UN training session for all those first-time delegates. This will give new delegates the tools needed to jump into the impassioned debate here at UPMUNC! Every Model UN delegate has a first time, and UPMUNC continues to make itself as great a starting point as possible! Many of the hundreds that return to UPMUNC made their Model UN debuts here.
How does the ad-Hoc Committee work?The ad-Hoc Committee of the Secretary-General has long been known as a staple of UPMUNC. As the comittee's identity is not released until one or two weeks before conference, participation requires an extra application to ensure strong delegates who can prepare with short notice.
How do country assignments work?When requesting assignments for UPMUNC, delegations are asked to rank ten countries, and five Crisis Committees of preference. Every effort is made to ensure that schools receive one of their top choices. This assignment process does not apply for application committees.
